Tangier. An illegal immigrant lives hidden in a small room in the attic of a building. In Tangier, illegal immigrants are wanted. Most are arrested and sent back to their home country. The only thing this man can do, all day, is peer out the window, observing his neighbors, imagining their lives and thinking back to his past, the circumstances that led him there, to being trapped in that room with no way out. Hamid Skif paints a gallery of portraits, from ruthless smugglers (as horrible as a man can be) to the man who prostitutes himself to survive in a hostile country, from the drug dealer to the police informant, from the torturer to the corrupt policeman. The novel features all the terrible and pathetic characters an illegal immigrant inevitably encounters. The book is a meditation on the terrible living conditions of illegal immigrants, people fleeing poverty, hunger, and dictatorships, dreaming of a better life in Western countries.
