Three visas and a motivation that can work for the three governments: Israel, the Palestinian National Authority and Hamas. Because if you want to go to Gaza you don’t have much choice: either you’re a journalist or you’re a humanitarian aid worker. Author of the successful podcast Stories from Gaza, reporter, director and activist with a large following on social media, Valerio Nicolosi has been teaching video journalism courses at the university in Gaza City since 2014, a city then under total siege. Nicolosi introduces us to another Gaza and another Palestine, focusing not on History, but on life stories immersed in a context of war and resistance, often hidden by indifference or by instrumentalized communication. From Hamas fighters in the Rafah tunnels to young parkourists who challenge the ruins, passing through strawberry growers, fishermen, students, up to the endless journeys in a fragmented and disputed territory like the West Bank, the photos and stories in these pages give a unique portrait of men and women, elderly and children for whom every daily gesture is courageous opposition, an act of struggle and hope and, above all, an ode to freedom, because “Gaza was life, it was despite the war, despite the siege, despite not having drinkable water in the taps or electricity in the evening”. Life in a city “that takes different shapes and directions, often unexpected, like flowers that emerge from the concrete, breaking that solid layer that would like to imprison and suffocate them, the same layer that the wall around the Strip is made of”. The life of those who, with their suitcases always ready, escape from the hell of their own home.
