For three-quarters of a century, Italian families have kept personal documents that a father, a grandfather, an uncle left in a box, a trunk, a drawer. They are letters, diaries, military records, medical records and many, many photographs. They were veterans of the war in Africa and for them memory became an obsession, a jealous form of retention of images, emotions and representations to be preserved. As part of the vast work that various scholars throughout Italy are carrying out, to recover and disseminate this ‘African treasure chest’, this volume presents four private collections of as many Italians who lived the colonial experience as conquerors, casting a glance at an unknown world, which remained, in some ways, impenetrable.
